Abstract
The versatility of the erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) enables its use as a high power booster amplifier at the transmitter, and as an optical preamplifier in the receiver to give a significant improvement in sensitivity, thereby greatly enhancing the path loss capability for multigigabit repeaterless transmission. In this paper we report transmission system experiments at 10 Gb/s over single span distances of 215 km of dispersion shifted fibre (DSF) and 180 km of standard (1300 nm optimised) single mode fibre.
