Abstract
Optical amplifiers with broad, flat gain spectra are important for multiple-wavelength systems and for short-pulse amplification. Various schemes have been proposed for flattening the gain spectrum of Er-doped-fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s), most of which are based on passive or active filtering of the high-gain features. The success of these techniques, however, depends on the amplifier’s operating point. Here we describe a system that automatically flattens and stabilizes the gain spectrum, with considerable tolerance to variations in the amplifier’s operating point.
