Abstract
Silicon optical bench refers to a collection of technologies that make the hybrid nature of photonics easier to implement. The natural scale for generating and controlling photons is several micrometers. Components or assembly techniques with this level of precision can be very costly, especially at the stage beyond initial prototype and before large-scale mass production. By adapting silicon-integrated-circuit technology with its mature infrastructure, thousands of components can be made with reproducible precision at low cost per component.
