Abstract

An interfiber optical coupling that makes use of microlensed fiber terminals composed of spherical silica lenses and non-doped silica-fiber segments for beam expansion that are fusion spliced to single-mode fibers is presented. This optical coupling permits optical devices to be inserted into the air gap between the terminals.
