Abstract
The promise of multi-terabit IP routers with high-speed interfaces matching perwavelength line rate in a DWDM system raises the specter of direct IP over DWM network architecture which usurps traditional transport layer functions. In this paper we will examine economic as well as operation aspects of this architecture against the architecture in wich an active optical layer provides wavelength level switching and management functions.
