Abstract
VCSELs (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) are currently the laser technology of choice for optical Enterprise networking while other more costly transport optics have dominated the rest of the optical network. This situation has made it difficult to cost justify non-transport level ports. Due to their high reliability, low power consumption, and cost effective packaging advantages, VCSEL-based transceivers are an excellent alternative to transport optics in the very short reach part of the network. The use of this technology allows for accelerated deployment of 10 Gbps links to the network bottlenecks. Specifically, those in the very short reach switching centers.
