Abstract
Holey optical fiber (HF) is an optical fiber having a new structure. Unlike a standard optical fiber whose core and cladding are made of different materials, the HF, also known as the photonic crystal fiber (PCF), is made of a single material with many air holes in it.1–3 The HF is fabricated by introducing a defect or a missing hole in an array of regularly spaced tiny air holes running along its propagation axis and the light is guided along the defect throughout the fiber length. The HF has attracted a lot of attention recently because of its unusual optical properties such as extra large chromatic dispersion,1 a wide range single mode operation,2 and very large mode area.3 These properties are potentially very useful for making novel fiber devices. In this paper, we have made a tapered optical fiber by using the HF and investigated guiding properties of it.
