Abstract
Amplitude fluctuations generated in the transmitter as well as the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from concatenated EDFAs in the transmission line contribute to a decrease in the signal-to noise ratio of the transmitted data. Intensity-dependent threshold devices such as the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) are well known for their application in optical switching1 and as intensity filter for noise reduction.2,3
