Abstract
High access bandwidths can be offered by deploying Fiber To The Home (FTTH) with ATM Passive Optical Networks (APONs). This solution is based on a point-to-multipoint system, offering the benefit of statistical multiplexing, keeping the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) passive, and allowing to share the modules in the Central Office (CO) and their cost over multiple users. The achieved split factor, being the amount of Optical Network Units (ONUs) connected to one Optical Line Termination (OLT) module, determines the amount of modules needed at the CO. The ITU-T G.983.1 Recommendation for APONs1 specifies a maximum split of 64. One system having already shown an increase of the split factor is the SuperPON.2 However, the Su-perPON requires a drastic change of the standards and involves optical amplification stages, which are only cost-effective on a long term. In the framework of the Flemish IWT project we proposed other concepts to increase the split by adding or modifying components purely at the OLT side.3 This approach is compatible with existing recommendations1 and economical on a short to medium term. It allows to soften the initial investments at introduction phase of PONs by regrouping the ONUs of several PONs to a single extended-split OLT module. The aimed split of 128 or 256 is useful for deployment with subscriber penetration below 25–50%, e.g., in introduction phase or overbuild case.
