Abstract
With the permeation of broadband services into residents and offices and the increase in bandwidth from 64 Kbps to 1–100 Mbps or even 1 Gbps, Internet and data traffic will continue to grow exponentially, requiring us to build high- capacity network systems. Thanks to WDM technology, point-to-point transmission capacity has increased dramatically in the past few years. However, the network nodes have to process a large number of incoming data packets, which is becoming difficult by electrical processing alone.
