Abstract
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers is well known to severely impair the signal quality in high bit rate long distance optical communication systems. When attenuation and chromatic dispersion are compensated for, PMD is regarded as one of the dominant obstacles in optical communication systems with bit rates of 40 Gb/s and beyond.
