Abstract
A transimpedance amplifier (TIA) is an essential component in a high performance optical receiver. Its purpose is to convert current pulses from a photodiode, which represent bits of information, into voltage signals that can drive a clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit. A SiGe HBT technology was chosen for the TIA because it provides an HBT with an fT of 120 GHz, which is adequate for the TIA bandwidth requirements, using mature Si process techniques.1 Using this technology, a TIA was developed for use in OC-768 40 Gb/s applications.
