Abstract
It is often necessary to wind hundreds of meters of fiber onto coils as small as one inch outside diameter (e.g. interferometric fiber gyros). Several factors will impact the performance of such fiber coils, especially when the environment is varied. These include the fiber core/clad index differential, wavelength of operation, fiber coating and winding technique. This paper gives results which indicate that small diameter coils can be fabricated with little degradation in optical properties over a large temperature range.
