Abstract
Recent progress towards the development of fully packaged, field ruggedized, high performance fiber optic (FO) accelerometers is reported. Appropriate design considerations, including a novel elliptical flexural disk design, have resulted in FO accelerometers with many desirable engineering features which include: (i) high sensitivity (> 20 dB re rad/g), (ii) broad frequency response (100 Hz to 20 kHz), (iii) low sensitivity to extraneous measurands (e.g. pressure sensitivity < -200 dB re rad/μPa), (iv) low transverse sensitivity (< -30 dB) and (v) small size (< 35 gms total). Preliminary results describing the performance of the FO accelerometers in field trials are also presented.
