Abstract
Large optical surfaces (e.g., telescope mirrors) are often individually made to precise surface tolerances by grinding and polishing. The optician in charge chooses his tools, materials and geometry parameters, based on previous experience. As work progresses, surface tests are made to reveal the progress. Changes in the polishing approach are made as he deems necessary. The total time to achieve the desired surface (within tolerance) is often one to two years.
