Abstract
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser, currently under construction at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), is comprised of over 9000 large optics.1 The size of these optics range from 41 cm × 41 cm to 45 cm × 80 cm and in thickness from 1 cm to 9 cm. All of the large glass optics are either square or rectangular and are fabricated of either fused silica, BK-7 or Nd-doped laser glass. Among the optic quality tests to be performed during fabrication is the mapping of surface imperfections, i.e. scratch and dig measurements.
