Abstract
The absence of yield under tension makes glass highly susceptible to flaws in its structure. That is, any defect whose geometry leads to large local stresses is a weak spot. Despite the myriad possibilities for flaw types, considerable success has been obtained by describing the flaws as elliptical cracks.1
