Abstract
As a viable alternative to large capital outlay for a "completely automated" coating machine, the purchase of a small computer with appropriate programs can be used successfully in the production of very complex optical coatings. The most common misconception of using a computer in a coating lab, is that all that is needed is a program that can compute the spectral properties of a given design (and, hopefully, have a refinement routine built in). The other misconception is that the program must be extremely fast.
