Abstract
In order to investigate the total optical loss mechanisms in multilayer coatings it is useful to complement radiation scattering experiments with measurements of losses due to absorption. Laser calorimetry is an appropriate technique for measuring absorption in low- and high-loss coatings since it is capable of producing absolute measurements (without the need for calibration using a sample of known absorptance) and has the potential for high sensitivity.
