Abstract
Atmospheric temperature profiles can be deduced from the molecular density profiles assuming hydrostatic equilibrium for the atmosphere where the density profiles can be obtained from the Rayleigh backscatter lidar signal profiles. This technique have been sucecssfully used to measure temperature above 35-km altitude where aerosol scattering is considered negligible compared with Rayleigh backscattering (Hauchecorne and Chanin, 1980).
