Abstract
The global measurements of temperature and water vapor required by increasingly sophisticated forecast models can only be supplied by satellite observations. Upcoming satellite atmospheric sounders such as the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) (Aumann and Pagano, 1994) will have sufficient spectral resolution to see in between spectral lines where the radiances are most sensitive to spectral line shapes and associated continua. Because these spectral regions have the narrowest weighting functions they are especially useful for retrieving atmospheric parameters.
