Abstract
we provide a clear experimental demonstration of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a symmetric double-well potential embedded in an optically induced photonic lattice in a photorefractive crystal. The symmetric ground state becomes asymmetric as the strength of the nonlinearity experienced by the probe beam exceeds a threshold value, while no such symmetry breaking occurs should the probe beam itself experience a null or very weak nonlinearity.
