Abstract
The design and development of integrated optical components require precise information about the propagating modes in the planar waveguides and their effective refractive indices (neff). Most of the standard telecommunication waveguides and fibers produced today contain germanium in the core and are therefore photosensitive. A long Bragg-Grating with very low refractive index change can be used to characterize the mode propagation in a waveguide because each mode will have a different effective refractive index and thus the corresponding transmission dip of the grating will be located at a characteristic centre wavelength.
