Abstract
Organic materials with conjugated, highly delocalized π electron systems show considerable promise as useful non-linear optical materials. The third order optical susceptibility of simple linear polyenes with 1 dimensional delocalized π systems, is understood reasonably well. The susceptibility scales as the delocalization length to a high power.1 We are investigating chemical approaches to further enhance the non-linear optical susceptibilities of organic systems.
