Abstract
The potential that short x-ray bursts from laser produced plasmas offers to a number of fields has been recognized for a long time. Apart from their application to the radiography of transient dense matter, such as the imploding shells of laser fusion targets,1 their use in time-dependent x-ray diffraction studies,2 EXAFS,3 x-ray lithography,4 and microscopy5 has been investigated. In recent times there has been rapid progress in the development of laser systems capable of providing output powers in the terawatt range with subpicosecond pulse duration.6-9
