Abstract
This paper describes our recent progress in the construction of fine period transmission diffraction gratings for atoms and their application to creating an interferometer for atoms. We present the diffraction patterns of atom waves from these gratings, then discuss a possible three-grating atom interferometer. To set our work in perspective, we briefly review other technologies available for coherently splitting and recombining atomic beams with a view to their suitability for interferometers.
