Abstract
Through their long interaction lengths, optical fibers provide a unique basis for investigation of the dynamical behavior of fundamental nonlinear interactions under ideal cw pump conditions. Here we report on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) induced in single-mode fiber (lengths 25-300 m; core diameter ~5µm) by using a cw single-mode laser pump source (argon ion: 514 nm). Remarkably, chaotic dynamics with modulation depths ~100% are found to prevail for almost all conditions of operation down to or dose to the threshold for SBS (typically 150 mW for 100-m fiber length) with no evidence of stable steady-state operation.
