Abstract
New experiments with cis-stilbene have shown that hot traits molecules are generated in the photoreaction. An approximate internal temperature for the product molecule of 700 K is somewhat less than expected from the available energy and indicates substantial frictional loss. Geometric features of the reaction coordinate for the cis-to-trans isomerism are deduced from these and transient absorption measurements, and it is proposed that the ethylene carbon atoms move substantially after excitation.
