Abstract
We report here the observation of particularly strong radiation emitted in the orange region of the spectrum from Sm3+:YAG. Stimulated emission from the4G5/2 multiplet to the 6H7/2 multiplet was observed by Kazakov et al. for Sm3+:TbF3,1, but little work has been reported on Sm3+ in other laser hosts. Because Y3Al5O12(YAG) has proven to be a useful host material in many laser applications, investigation of the spectroscopic properties of rare-earth ions in YAG is of obvious practical importance.
