Abstract
Ultrafast nonlinearities in semiconductor diode lasers are important to a number of topics of current interest. For example, the incorporation of traveling wave amplifiers into wideband optical networks will require detailed knowledge of their high-speed gain and refractive-index dynamics. In addition, an ultrafast refractive index nonlinearity in a diode laser could become the basis for all-optical switch. With these uses in mind—and to gain further insight into fundamental processes in diode lasers—we have performed time resolved pump-probe studies of femtosecond gain and refractive-index nonlinearities in an AlGaAs diode laser amplifier.
