Abstract
It was recently discovered and demonstrated that a quantum correlation exists between the junction-voltage fluctuation and the external-field photon-number fluctuation of a semiconductor laser,1 The correlation originates in the dipole interaction between the internal-field and the electron-hole pairs. Fluctuating forces from the various reservoirs limit the degree of the correlation. In a constant-current-driven laser, the pump noise is below the shot noise level, and simultaneously the junction voltage is free to fluctuate. In the absence of pump noise, the main noise source that limits the correlation in a conventional diode laser is the loss of spontaneous emission into nonlasing modes.
