Abstract
The need for rapid photonic switching has produced interest in the design of nonlinear directional couplers in which the dependence of the index of refraction on the light intensity can serve to rapidly switch a light signal between the channels of the coupler as the intensity increases or decreases. Proper fabrication of such couplers requires computation of the design characteristics needed to produce appropriate coupling lengths and switching intensities.
