Abstract
Zwitterions are molecules with permanently separated positive and negative charges. DEMI-3CNQ and its derivatives are of interest for nonlinear-optical applications because of their large measured dipole moment (45 D) and charge-transfer excitation. Many nonlinear organic materials are based on a conjugated backbone structure that, when excited, moves the charge distribution down the molecule, giving it a larger dipole moment. It is thought that these zwitterionic molecules work in reverse, the charge being redistributed such that the dipole moment is lessened with excitation.
