Abstract
Renewed interest in the lifetimes of the excited states of alkali atoms arises from their importance in the interpretation of experiments such as those dealing with parity violation in heavy atoms. Agreement between measured and calculated values varies for the alkalis—for sodium, in particular, there is an ~1% (4σ) discrepancy over the 3p lifetime.1-3
