Abstract
We present what we believe to be the first experimental evidence that shows the effect of a photonic band gap in the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on molecular fluorescence. The potential for photonic materials has been widely discussed,1 with particular interest in their use for controlling spontaneous emission.2 In this work we show how a photonic band gap in surface, rather than bulk, modes may be used to control the emission spectrum of dye molecules.
