Abstract
Very large two dimensional (2D) vertical-cavity phase-locked laser arrays1 were reported, exhibiting a single array mode operation for more than 500 laser elements, larger by an order of magnitude than what reported for one-dimensional (1D) arrays. We demonstrated experimentally the improved coherence of a 2D array relative to a similar 1D version.2 The large 2D arrays can serve to explore the general characteristics of extended two-dimensional systems of locally coupled nonlinear oscillators.
