Abstract
The gain and index dynamics in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) have been investigated extensively.1,2 However, ultrafast coherent effects from the dynamics of the optical polarization have not been studied in these devices. This is probably due to the fact that the most practical technique to study the polarization dynamics, i.e., degenerate four- wave mixing (FWM) with spatial separation of pump and probe beams,3 is not applicable in a waveguide geometry.
