Abstract
The size of optical devices is limited to wavelength-order due to diffraction. In order to realize optical devices in nanometer-order, we have proposed the concept of two-dimensional (2D) optical wave and 2D optical waveguide theoretically. What is 2D optical wave? It has 2 real and 1 imaginary components in k vector and propagates in dielectric/negative dielectric (ND) interface. Metal is known as ND at visible and IR range. For example, coupled surface plasmon polariton (SPP) in thin metal gap structure (NDgap) is 2D optical wave. In the previous studies, we have shown that 2D optical wave in NDgap can be confined and guided in a nanometer-order core structure.12 We stress that 2D optical waveguide is not a conventional waveguide, but principally new one. Here, we report the experimental results of 2D optical waveguide. We measured the propagation loss of 2D optical wave in NDgap.
