Abstract
Light can be slowed down by several orders of magnitude on a chip by means of photonic crystals. One of the advantages of photonic crystals is that they can achieve an appreciable slow down at a high bandwidth. With a unique phase-sensitive and time-resolved near-field microscope we have observed light fields that have a speed of, at most, c/1000. In addition the photonic band structure of the photonic crystal structure is experimentally determined. We will also show that care has to be taken in slow light applications based on simple photonic crystal structures: higher-order dispersion may lead to significant pulse broadening without proper engineering of the photonic crystal.
