Abstract
Mesostructured silica spheres up to 500 nm in diameter are fabricated using porphyrin materials to prevent fusing and aggregation of silica nanoparticles. In contrast to previous work using surfactant template sol-gel and other surfactant template techniques, porphyrins offer the potential of greater chemical flexibility for the integration of added functionality. Potentially greater biocompatibility is possible given the presence of porphyrins in blood.
