Abstract
We study numerically the emission of sporadic rogue intensity pulses in an optically injected semiconductor laser operating in a chaotic dynamical regime. We show that the amplitude of these pulses can be reduced below a safety threshold by perturbing the system with a weak sinusoidal modulation of the bias current or with a moderate amount of incoherent light acting as a source of noise. The probability of observing rogue intensity pulses is also investigated when both a current modulation and noise act simultaneously. We show that their combined effects can significantly modify the likelihood of occurrence of a rogue wave. The results are compared with the unperturbed dynamics showing a resonant-like behavior near the characteristic time scales of the underlying dynamics.
