Abstract
Since the first laser has been developed there has been strong interest to use this new instrument for the treatment of dental decay. Main motivation was the expectation that a contactless "laser drill” should be less painful to the patient. After more than 3 decades of research this dream has become true. Er:YAG lasers have been proven to allow a less painful and more comfortable removal of caries compared to the conventional bur. Meanwhile this type of laser is commercially available by various manufacturers.
