Abstract
A pulse compression method utilizing electrooptic phase modulation1,2 can be applied not only to forced modelocked lasers but also to cw lasers3. With this method, the temporal pulse position is electrically controllable and the pulsewidth does not depend on laser power and linewidth. It is superior to the ordinary pulse compression method using self-phase modulation of an optical fiber4 in stability and controllability. In picosecond or shorter range, however, any successful results have not been reported. In this paper, we report the first successful experimental result of pulse compression in picosecond range with this method as well as the result of theoretical analyses.
