Abstract
The nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM)[1] and the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM)[2] been proposed as high speed optical switches. Another application of these devices is as intensity dependent elements in all fiber laser cavities. One particularly successful application is in the Figure Eight Laser (F8L).[3] This laser, pictured in Figure 1, consists of a NALM whose output has been coupled to its input through an optical isolator and an output coupler.
