Abstract
To every optical system S consisting of thin lenses illuminated by narrow beams, there corresponds a dual system Su with the following property: If the complex amplitudes of the fields on the input and output planes of S and Su are a(x,y), au(x,y) and b(x,y), bu(x,y), respectively, and au(x,y) equals the Fourier transform of a(x,y), then bu(x,y) equals the Fourier transform of b(x,y). This dualism can be used to simplify the analysis and synthesis of certain idealized systems.
