Numerical evaluation of temporal focusing characteristics in transparent and scattering media: erratum

Abstract

An error was made in omitting the effect of different refractive indices on the propagation of temporally focusing light. We have corrected the error and recalculated the relevant parts of the presented model, without significant change in the paper's findings.

In the article [1] we presented a model for temporally focused light propagation inside transparent and scattering media. In the description of light propagation we did not correctly account for the different refractive indices near the diffraction grating and the objective’s focal plane. Therefore, Eq. (1) should be changed to:

where nf and ng are the refractive indices near the objective’s focal plane and the diffraction grating respectively.

The modified equation was used to recalibrate the laser's pulse duration at the focal plane to 250 fsec (instead of 325 fsec). In the figure comparing model results to the experimental measurements (Fig. 3) there are only minor, insignificant alterations in the model points. All other calculated simulation results are accurate for the case of nf = ng = 1; for imaging inside biological tissue (nf = 1.33), the analytical approximation (Eq. (3)) works well with these modified parameters: k1 = 0.1, k2 = 0.65, and k3 = 2.17.
