Abstract
The torque created by a vortex beam is expressed by an exact formula developed through classical electromagnetic theory. The torque is linearly related to the orbital angular momentum mode. Optical torque can be reduced due to power fluctuations upon propagation through atmospheric turbulence. Our analysis relates the optical torque reduction to the atmospheric rotational correlation function.
