Progress in Active Optics allows generation of high quality toric mirrors for the VLT-SPHERE extreme adaptive optics instrument. Three toric mirrors are spherically polished under stress to minimize residual speckles in stellar images, improving the accuracy of exoplanet detection (credit CNRS). For details, see the paper by Hugot et al., pp. 2932-2941.
