Abstract
The absorption spectra of Cu+ and Cu2+ in KC1 solid solution were investigated. Cu+ has two absorption bands in the uv region peaking at ∼210 and 270–272 mμ. Cμ2+ gives a broad absorption band peaking at 255–257 mμ. The broadening of the band and the undefined position of its peak is partly due to the decomposition of a fraction of Cu(ii)Cl2 to Cu(i)Cl and elementary chlorine. The latter is responsible for a strong absorption in the 200-mμ region.
The production of KCl:Cu+ phosphors is difficult owing to the presence of oxidizing agents in commercially available KC1. Accidental contamination by a reducing agent (polyethylene, from containers) helped to overcome this difficulty.
