Abstract
The propagation of electromagnetic waves along the z axis in a radially inhomogeneous medium described by ∊ = ∊0 − ∊2(z)ρ2 is studied. The analysis assumes that ∊2(z) is constant over a certain interval of length and that there is no correlation of the values of ∊2(z) in two intervals. The dependence of the focusing properties of the medium on the correlation length and on the standard deviation in ∊2(z) have been investigated. The relevance of these investigations to the gas lens and GRIN (Selfoc) fibers is pointed out.
